Biotechnology and genomics

This theme makes use of cutting edge technologies for crop improvement, employing tools such as molecular genetics, embryogenesis, tissue culture, genetic transformation and proteomics

Research areas:

  • Plant tissue culture and transgenic research and the potential of underutilised crops, specifically looking at its medicinal and nutritional values
  • Isolation of markers linked with beneficial agronomic traits in crops for use in marker-assisted selection
  • Cell tissue culture and in vitro regenration of plants
  • Proteomic analysis of somatic embryogenesis in tissue culture of oil palm
  • Identification, mapping and marker development for genes controlling disease resistance in oil palm
  • Molecular biology and physiology of plant abiotic stress tolerance
