Environmental Science

This research theme is comprised of two high-calibre research groups.

Tropical Catchments Research Initiative (TROCARI)

TROCARI is a joint research initiative by:

  • The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus (UNMC)
  • University Technology Malaysia (UTM),
  • University Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS)
  • Forestry Research Institute of Malaysia (FRIM)
  • Global Environment Centre (GEC)

Together these organisations undertake a range of research initiatives related to catchment ecology, hydrogeochemistry and catchment management and policy.

This research has additional collaborations from Glasgow University and the CLAD (Carbon Landscapes and Drainage) UK-based research group.

TROCARI is interested in:

  • water and soil quality assessments,
  • forestry management impacts to catchment processes,
  • carbon budgets and losses
  • relating localised catchment-scale variables to the wider global carbon budgets

Tropical Functional Ecology

This research group has a general interest in how tropical ecosystems function both on the macro- and micro-scales.

Currently, the main area of interest is relating terrestrial land use type and alteration to aquatic ecosystem functioning (both freshwater and marine) within the tropical environment. The group conducts terrestrial based work e.g. Carbon cycling in underutilised crops and novel cropping systems.
