Editor's note

Nottingham University Business School (NUBS) Malaysia is pleased to present our third quarterly
newsletter for the calendar year 2014. This issue will feature various events from the third quarter
of 2014 as well as recent research projects, publications, speaking engagements and upcoming NUBS
Malaysia’s events.

NUBS Malaysia’s faculty members featured in speaking engagements

Dr Carol Hooi, Associate Professor of Human Resources Management and Organisational Behaviour,
presented her research paper on HRM Intensity, Corporate Entrepreneurship and Organisational Learning
Capability in SMEs: What is the Relationship?
at the Prague 12th International Conference. The conference
was held in Prague from 1-4 September 2014 and was attended by academics from various countries
around the world.

Research projects

Inclusive Innovation System in Malaysia with UNIID-SEA (Bangkok) by Dr Avvari V Mohan 

This paper is part of the Cross-national Survey on University and Research Council Roles on Southeast Asia
Inclusive Development and Innovation project. The wider project involves five countries in Southeast Asia
and the aim of the paper is to understand inclusive innovation system elements in Malaysia. It explores
different organisations and institutions in terms of funding and support towards inclusive innovation
development in Malaysia.

advisory board
Dr Nafis Alam, Associate Professor of Finance at NUBS Malaysia has been appointed to Islamic and Middle
Eastern Finance Journal editorial advisory board. 

Awards for other University contributions
Two members of NUBS Malaysia academic staff received Vice-Chancellor’s Achievement Awards on 26
September 2014 in recognition of their valuable contributions to the University and its community:

  • Ms Vanitha Ponnusamy: Assistant Professor of Organisational Management in the Faculty of Arts
    and Social Sciences. She is also the Campus Senior Tutor, School Senior Tutor, Division Director for
    Management and Organisation Behaviour and the Faculty Advisor for Students in Free Enterprise
    (SIFE) at The University Nottingham Malaysia Campus. 
  • Dr Kenny Meng Seng Wong: Assistant Professor of Information Systems and Director of
    Undergraduate Programmes in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.  

Inaugural NUBS Malaysia Research Awards for staff
NUBS Malaysia awarded five enthusiastic researchers for their significant research contributions
on 8 August 2014. The recipients are:

  • Dr Nafis Alam (Associate Professor of Finance)
  • Dr Mohan Avvari (Associate Professor of Strategic Management)
  • Dr Maniam Kaliannan (Associate Professor of Human Resource Management)
  • Dr Muhammad Mohsin Butt (Assistant Professor of Marketing)
  • Dr Rasyad Parinduri (Assistant Professor of Business Economics) 
  • Ms Ng Pek Kim (University Teaching Fellow)

Speaking Engagements 

  • Dr Eva Tsahuridu, the team leader of Accounting Policy with Certified Practising Accountants (Australia),
    spoke about Ethics for Professional Accountants at The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus. The
    event will be held on 5 November 2014.
  • Mr Liew Kim Yuen is Director for Corporate Finance/Corporate Recovery and Restructuring at Ferrier
    Hodgson MH and the former General Manager and Head of the Financial and Corporate Surveillance at the Securities Commission Malaysia. He spoke about Earnings Management, Creative Accounting and Corporate Scandals at The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus. The event will be held on 11 November 2014.
