General Studies Department Modules for Malaysian Students

U1: Appreciating Philosophy, Values and History 

1. Tamadun Islam dan Tamadun Asia

This course discusses civilisational studies which include introduction to civilisational studies, interaction between various civilisations of Malay, Chinese and Indian, Islam in Malay civilisation, issues of contemporary Islamic and Asian Civilisation, Islam Hadhari and the nation building process. The objective of this course is to introduce students to the science of civilisation which include introduction to civilisational studies, interaction between various civilisations, issues of contemporary and its implications for the development process of the country in addition to producing students who have mutual respect, adopting values and identity as citizens.  

2. Hubungan Etnik

This course focuses on ethnic relations in Malaysia which is a dynamic process of social relations. The aim of this course is to enhance students' understanding of the concept of social cohesion, a portrait of ethnic relations, the basic concepts of ethnic relations, plurality and a plural society in Malaysia, political development, economic development, and the Malaysian constitution in ethnics relations in Malaysia, integration and address the challenges, religion and society, government and community contributions and inter-ethnic and intra-ethnic.

 

U2: Mastering Humanity Skills


1. Professional Ethics 

This module forms part of the compulsory set of General Studies (MPU) units that all students must complete in order to graduate from a Malaysian university. As a U2 classified module, Professional Ethics will help you to develop some of the soft skills and knowledge that are necessary to operate inthe global workforce, whatever your specific field of study might be. This module is a general studies module for students from all disciplines. It explores ethical questions in professional and work practice. By exploring different philosophical approaches to ethics and their application in real worldsituations the module prepares students to consider the implications of their own behaviours, in scientific and social contexts, such that responsible citizenship may be practised and developed in a range of professional settings. Professional values are developed by engaging in group exercises and problem solving activities. The module will also help you to develop skills in communication, in teamwork, in managing and utilising information and evidence, and in sound and responsible decision-making. The knowledge and skills imparted throughout the course are highly valued by employers, and are intended to help you succeed at university and beyond. 

2. Leadership

The module helps student to apply the basic principles of leadership by developing the practical skills necessary to function as a leader in a realistic context. It discusses the different leadership roles, and describes the implications of enhancing one’s leadership skills to the organisation/ institution.The theories, styles and approaches to leadership determine its nature and relevance to the professional role of participants, and enable participants to determine their own personal & professional developmental needs relating to leadership and to devise action plans to achieve those needs.By developing a range of leadership knowledge will support and enrich students’ future careers and give them the tools for decision-making in a complex world. 

3. Bahasa Kebangsaan A if without credit in SPM Bahasa Melayu 

Kursus ini bertujuan meningkatkan kecekapan dan kemahiran pelajar menggunakan bahasa Melayu sebagai wahana komunikasi dan penyampai ilmu yang padat, jitu dan canggih. Kursus ini membolehkan pelajar untuk menguasai kemahiran berbahasa dan berkomunikasi dengan berkesan bagi menghayati dan melahirkan fikiran tentang ilmu pengetahuan, hal-hal persendirian dan kemasyarakatan dalam konteks rasmi, kreatif dan bukan kreatif melalui lisan dan penulisan serta memupuk daya pengembangan berbahasa pelajar bagi kepentingan pendidikan tinggi dan kerjaya.    

 

U3: Broadening Knowledge About Malaysia


1. Natural Resources of Malaysia (NRM) 

This module provides a broad understanding of the history and origins of the Southeast Asian sub region with a focus on natural resources and human societies in Malaysia. The module is divided into 10 topics, including a short introductory topic and a final revision topic. Topics contain around ten themes. Within each theme multiple concepts are introduced which students should investigate in the context of the topic and theme. Assessment may be related to any concept in the course. All topic are available on Moodle and are supported by a website enabling self-guided, web-based learning and research into each named concept. Recommended reading accompanies each topic and are noted below. Recommendations for appropriate local excursions are also made. The course operates as a flipped class: reading and study is conducted individually for each topic as and when serves the student best. Study for each topic or group of topics should occur before and after each workshop, as detailed by the facilitator. 

2. Introduction to Multicultural Malaysia 

The module explores the different scores of ethnic groups in Malaysia.  It also introduces students to the key features of contemporary Malaysian society and cultural life, examining how the present is shaped by Malaysia’s distinctive history and by the global trends. The module prepares students to understand the cultural fusion that underscores the multiculturalism of Malaysia and how this has fostered a unique national heritage: a melting pot of ethnicities, cultures and traditions.

 

U4: Developing Practical Community-Minded Skills
This module is introduced to nurture the spirit of volunteerism and provide a means for the student to utilise his/her talents, energy and strengths on meaningful projects to help  those who are less fortunate or with certain needs. The module will last about four (4) weeks in which each student must complete 30 hours of community service. 

Community Service (CS) is defined as any voluntary act or service performed by a student without any expectation of remuneration in any form that benefits the university, the community and/or an organisation in a particular area. 
 




General Studies Department Modules for International Students
 

U1: Appreciating Philosophy, Values and History 

1. Malay Language Communication II

This course is designed for students to be able to communicate in the Malay language and develop their ideas and feelings in verbal and written form.

2. Malaysian Studies

This course explains the sociocultural system, process of nation building, political structure and contribution of Malaysia in the international arena. This course also emphasizes on Malaysian history and politics, the Constitution of Malaysia, its community and solidarity, nation building and other key issues of national concern.
