MA TESOL

MA Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)

About

This long-established and internationally recognised programme is highly relevant for teachers of English to speakers of other languages (TESOL) and other professionals in English language teaching and related disciplines. It is suitable for those wishing to take up posts of responsibility as advisers/inspectors, course designers, managers, teacher trainers and other senior positions in TESOL.

The full MA programme lasts for one year full-time or two years part-time.  It comprises core modules, including written work, totaling 140 credits two elective modules totalling 40 credits. In addition, there is a dissertation (60 credits) of 12,000-15,000 words on a topic related to one of the modules and approved by a tutor. (Total: 180 credits.) Each 20-credit module is assessed by a written assignment of approximately 4,000 words.

Entry requirements

To register for the TESOL programme, you normally need to be:

  • A graduate of an approved university or institute of higher education
  • A holder of an approved professional qualification equivalent to a first degree

Applicants whose first language is not English must, as a minimum, fulfill one of the following conditions:

  • IELTS 7.0 (no less than 6.5 in the reading and writing elements)
  • TOEFL paper-based 600 (no less than 5.0 in TWE)
  • TOEFL computer-based 250 (no less than 5.0 in essay rating)
  • TOEFL iBT 100 (no less than 21 in any element)
