Results of poetry competition released

THE preliminary results of the Malaysian Universities Poetry Writing Competition (MUPWC) 2017 has been released. 

MUPWC organising committee chairman Prof Malachi Edwin Vethamani said the winners of the competition will be announced at a prize giving ceremony on Dec 15 at the Great Hall, University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus. Deputy Higher Education Minister Datuk Dr Mary Yap will present the prizes to the winners who must be present to receive them. 

The competition was sponsored by the Higher Education Ministry and organised by the university’s School of English. 

The students whose poems have been shortlisted will read their poems at the ceremony. 

The 14 long-listed poems (in random order) are:

  • The Bonsai Tree in the Schoolyard;
  • Grass Smoke;
  • Harvey, This is How I’ll Remember You;
  • Skeleton Feed (Somalia);
  • The Wolf and Her Reflection;
  • Skeletons in My Closet;
  • Dragon Fruit;
  • Big Girl Maths;
  • Watching Grass Grow;
  • The Jerry Can Stories;
  • Howl;
  • Black Dog;
  • Stars and Me; and
  • The Theory of Relativity. 

The 10 short-listed poems (in random order) are:

  • This is How I’ll Remember You;
  • Grass Smoke;
  • The Bonsai Tree in the Schoolyard;
  • Big Girl Maths;
  • The Jerry Can Stories;
  • Dragon Fruit;
  • Skeleton Feed (Somalia);
  • Howl;
  • Black Dog;
  • Stars and Me; and
  • Harvey.
