The School of English Language Education (SELE) provides the English Language and Study Skills Module for students on Foundation Courses. English Language and Study Skills (ENO ELI, ENO ELA and ENO ELB) aim to extend students' linguistic and study skills to a level that is adequate for full participation in (a) the foundation course and (b) undergraduate studies (as set by target departments).
The first unit ENO ELI provides an introduction to study skills and to academic reading, writing and listening in addition to enhancing English language competency. These introductory subjects prepare students for full participation in their foundation year studies.
The second unit, ENO ELA concentrates on the spoken and written language of description, cause and effect, comparison and contrast and definition, classification and exemplification. This enables students to distinguish text types, recognise register (style) and select appropriate language for given communicative functions. In addition to organising and writing short reports and essays, students will be able to plan and deliver a short presentation.
The final unit enhances students linguistic and study skills to a point where they can progress to their chosen undergraduate courses. Students are able to apply what they have learnt in order to recognise and remedy areas of linguistic weakness. They also learn to work with other students in order to research, plan and write a short research report and deliver a group presentation.
