The University of Nottingham School of Biosciences is internationally recognised as a leader in the provision of research and teaching in fundamental and applied animal, plant, microbial and physical sciences important for the improvement of agricultural and food production, food quality and safety, nutrition and protection of the environment. The School in the UK is made up of five Divisions: Agricultural and Environmental Sciences; Plant and Crop Sciences; Animal Sciences; Food Sciences and Nutritional Sciences and offers first degree and higher degree programmes at the Sutton Bonington Campus and University Park in the UK and the Semenyih Campus in Malaysia.
The School of Biosciences is a strong and strategically smart academic community with an internationally competitive research environment combined with teaching excellence. It comprises 81 academic staff, 880 undergraduates, 180 taught postgraduates and 190 research postgraduates.
Our research excellence is recognised independently as being of international importance. In the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) we obtained 5A in all of our units of assessment, the highest mark in the UK for our subject areas. The 2008 RAE announced in December 2008 confirmed our top position in the UK in our subject areas as assessed by independent analysis conducted by Research Fortnight. This provides a ‘Research Power’, an important measure because it gives an excellent indication of both critical mass in research and international impact.
The School's teaching quality is regularly recognised as outstanding. A score of 23 out of 24 was achieved in the most recent Teaching Quality Assessment, again the highest mark in our subject areas.
A flexible course structure in the School based on a modular system allows students to tailor their degree to their own specific requirements. Research projects give students individual ownership of their degree. The School's links with industry are fully incorporated into the teaching programme and ensure that graduates are fully equipped for the world of work. The School also has a community of over 100 taught MSc students. Graduates from the School of Biosciences are to be found in senior positions throughout the world in all areas of the biosciences.
The School of Biosciences Malaysia Campus offers a Foundation programme in Biosciences, a BSc Honours in Plant Biotechnology and an MSc in Crop Biotechnology. The School of Biosciences also offers MPhil/PhD in many different fields of biosciences.
