Wi-Fi for staff and students

eduroam is the main wireless network for staff, associates and students.

 

How do I connect to the Wi-Fi?

To connect:

  1. Go to Wi-Fi settings on your device
  2. Select 'eduroam'
  3. When prompted, enter your University username followed by @nottingham.edu.my. For example: abyab@nottingham.edu.my
  4. Enter your University password
  5. Accept certificate if prompted

 

If you experience any problems connecting your device, use the Configuration Assistance Tool. It will detect what device and operating system you are running.

You should only need to authenticate once, after that you'll automatically connect to eduroam when it is available. You will need to repeat these steps if you change your password.

Additional instructions for setting up your mobile with eduroam.

Android

Connecting Android 4.4 and above devices to eduroam.

To connect:

  1. Select Settings
  2. Select WiFi
  3. Select 'eduroam' from the list of available wireless networks.
  4. Enter the following settings. Note that not all of these settings may be required for your device.
  • SSID: eduroam
  • Encryption: 802.1X, WPA2-Enterprise
  • Username/Identity: Your University username@nottingham.edu.my
  • Outer Identity: Blank or use anonymous@nottingham.edu.my
  • Password: Your University password
  • User authentication settings: EAP/PEAP MSCHAPv2
  • Domain: Leave blank
  • Proxy: should be set to Auto

Automatic configuration

You may also be able to use the eduroamCAT application, which will automatically configure your device.

Before you proceed with installation on Android systems, please make sure that you have installed the eduroamCAT application. eduroamCAT application is available on Google Play and will use the configuration settings file to set up your device.

When prompted for your username (called 'identity' in some versions), enter it as username@nottingham.edu.my

Important: Please note that using the eduroamCAT tool will force you to set a PIN code to access your device if you have not already done so. You cannot disable this PIN once set.

Apple iOS

Connecting your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch to eduroam. 

You can download an automatic eduroam configuration file for iOS devices. Please note you will need to enter your username in the format username@nottingham.edu.my when prompted.

Latest software

If you have a problem connecting your Apple device to eduroam, you may need to upgrade to the latest software:

Changed your University password?

If you have changed your University password since setting up the wireless network you may need to forget the network and re-connect.

  1. Open Settings
  2. Touch Wi-Fi
  3. Touch the arrow on the right hand side of eduroam (on iOS7+ this appears as a blue 'i' in a circle) and touch 'Forget this network'
  4. Touch Forget from the dialog box
  5. Go back to the Wi-Fi menu and follow the connection instructions above.

 

Apple OS X

You can install an automatic configuration file for Apple OS X which will set your computer up to work with eduroam. When prompted for your University username and password, make sure you enter it in the format username@nottingham.edu.my

Latest software

If you have a problem connecting your Mac to eduroam, you may need to upgrade to the latest software.

 

BlackBerry

BlackBerry 10

To connect your BlackBerry 10 device to eduroam, install the RADIUS certificate first.

  1. On your BlackBerry, download the certificate file and install it
  2. Go to Wi-Fi settings (swipe down from the top of screen)
  3. Select the eduroam network
  4. Enter your username in the format username@nottingham.ac.uk and your password
  5. Select Advanced and enter the following:
    1. CA Certificate: scroll down until you see 'Quovadis Root Certificate Authority' and select it.
      Note there may be three entries for Quovadis, be careful to choose the correct one.
    2. Inter-Access Point Handover: set this to On
  6. Click Connect on the top-right of the screen.

Older BlackBerry devices

You can also connect older BlackBerry devices (such as 9270) to eduroam:

  1. On your BlackBerry, go to Wi-Fi settings (scroll up to the top and select)
  2. Select the eduroam network
  3. Enter your username in the format username@nottingham.edu.my and your password
  4. Ensure the box labelled 'Disable Server Certificate Validation' is checked
  5. Check the box labelled 'Inter-Access Point Handover'
  6. Click Connect

 

Linux

You can download an automatic configuration script for some Linux distributions. You will need to enter your username in the format username@nottingham.edu.my when prompted.

Connecting manually

Some distributions do not support the automatic configuration tool, and should use the manual settings. 

Latest software

If you have a problem connecting your laptop, you may need to upgrade to the latest software. Please run your distributions software update mechanism to check this.

Changed your University password?

If you have changed your University password since setting up the wireless network you may need to forget the network and re-connect.

 

Microsoft Windows

Connecting your Windows 8/10 device to eduroam automatically.

You can download an automatic configuration program for Windows. You will need to enter your username in the format username@nottingham.edu.my when prompted.

Latest software

If you have a problem connecting your laptop, you may need to upgrade to the latest software.

Changed your University password?

If you have changed your University password since setting up the wireless network you may need to forget the network and re-connect.

 

Windows Phone

Connecting your Windows Phone 8 or Windows Mobile 10 device to eduroam.

There isn't an automatic way to connect a Windows phone to eduroam however connection is simple.

  1. Go to Settings -> WiFi
  2. Tap eduroam and enter the following details:
    1. Connect using: Your username and password
    2. Username: username@nottingham.edu.my
    3. Password: Your password
    4. Server Certificate Validation: None
    5. EAP Method: PEAP MS-CHAP v2

If you have changed your University password since setting up the wireless network you may need to forget the network and re-connect.

 

Other devices

You can connect other devices to the eduroam wireless service if it supports 802.1X or WPA2-Enterprise encryption. Most devices will need the following information at minimum:

  1. Select the wireless network eduroam from the list of available networks
  2. Enter your University username in the format username@nottingham.edu.my and your password
  3. Save and connect

Automatic configuration

For some devices, an automatic configuration tool (CAT) may be available.

Generic settings

Not all of these settings may be required for your device, but you may need some of them to connect successfully.

  • SSID: eduroam
  • Encryption: 802.1X, WPA2-Enterprise
  • Username or Identity: Your University username in the format username@nottingham.edu.my
  • Outer Identity: Blank or use anonymous@nottingham.edu.my
  • Password: Your University password
  • User authentication settings: EAP/PEAP MSCHAPv2
  • Domain: Leave blank
  • Proxy: should be set to Auto

 

Security information

You may experience a security or certificate warning when first connecting to eduroam at The University of Nottingham. To ensure your safety, check that the certificate you are presented with matches the following information:

  • Server common name (CN): radius.nottingham.ac.uk
  • Issued by: QuoVadis Global SSL ICA G2
  • Issued to: Information Services, The University of Nottingham, NOTTINGHAM, Nottinghamshire, GB
  • Valid from: 16/07/2015
  • Valid to: 16/07/2018

You can also install the certificate yourself before connection either using CAT or by downloading and double clicking it to install.

 


 

Policies

When connected to eduroam at a participating institution, you are bound by our Code of Practice and the acceptable use policy of the site you are visiting. Failure to adhere could result in disciplinary procedures.
