The UNMC School of Modern Languages and Cultures' Associate Professor Zaharom Nain recently spoke to the prestigious NPR radio service OnTheMedia.org about the issue of online and offline free speech in the context of the Malaysian media environment. He was joined by Masjaliza Hamzah from the Malaysian Centre for Independent Journalism, as well as Steven Gan, co-founder of the Malaysian independent news site, Malaysiakini. The SMLC and its Research Centre for the Study of Communications and Cultures (CSCC) has ongoing partnerships with these representatives of free speech, critical debate, and independent journalism through such events as our Voices seasons of public lectures, and is proud to share the podcast of the discussion - we hope you enjoy listening to it.
OnTheMedia.org (OTM) is a public radio service provided by National Public Radio (NPR). Since OTM was re-launched in 2001, it has been one of NPR's fastest growing programs, heard on more than 300 public radio stations. It has won Edward R. Murrow Awards for feature reporting and investigative reporting, the National Press Club's Arthur Rowse Award for Press Criticism and a Peabody Award for its body of work.
