On Saturday 12 November, students and staff from the School of Modern Languages and Cultures attended the preview screening for the upcoming Malaysian noir thriller Interchange. Directed by Dain Said, known for his 2011 film Bunohan (Return to Murder), Interchange follows the police photographer Adam into a web of deception and murder in a mythical Southeast Asian metropolis. The film stars Malaysians Iedil Putra and Shaheizy Sam, and Indonesians Prisia Nasution and Nicholas Saputra. The film premiered at Locarno and Toronto Film Festivals and will open the 2016 Singapore International Film Festival on November 23. In the Q&A following the screening students and staff came to understand the difficult creative and production process that goes into making a feature film. Dain stressed the important role of the producer (Nan Solomon) in conceptualising, managing, and developing the project in tandem with the director and writers. He implored aspiring filmmakers to be cultural omnivores consuming everything from music, literature, history, politics, and art. Interchange will be released for general exhibition on 1 December 2016 in Malaysia.
