Centre for Intelligent Computation

Overview

The Centre for Intelligent Computation focuses on the development of various techniques of artificial intelligence (AI), and the application of these techniques to a wide range of real-world problems, including information retrieval and knowledge management.

Much, although not all, of this work is loosely inspired by biological systems:

  • Evolutionary computing is one such technique that exploits strategic interactions between populations of solutions that compete for survival and reproductive success – ultimately leading to increasingly innovative and higher performance solutions.
  • Another approach is computational neuroscience – the investigation of how biological neural systems solve computational problems, and building software that is inspired by these systems.

In addition to biologically inspired computing, we study how the structure of information space may facilitate information retrieval in multiple contexts. We also apply these and other techniques to the processing and retrieval of information from large bodies of text such as the World Wide Web.

Topics

Alongside our academic and industry collaborative partners some of our main areas of research interest include:

  • The design of hyperstructures for intelligent information retrieval
  • The theory and application of co-evolutionary computing
  • Computational neuroscience
  • Information retrieval and machine learning for the semantic web
  • IT tools for knowledge management
