The Centre for Islamic Business and Finance Research (CIBFR), UNMC is pleased to invite you to an industry forum, which aims to bring industry leaders, regulators and academics together to discuss Islamic banking and finance global issues and the way forward for the Islamic finance sector. As one of the global leaders in Islamic finance research and teaching, CIBFR also aims to deliberate on the major theme of risk management for Islamic financial institutions and the way forward towards its global acceptance.

Session 1: BASEL III and Risk Management for IFIs (14:00 - 15:30) 
As banks around the world gear up to meet tough Basel III regulatory standards, Islamic lenders face a source of uncertainty that could prove expensive for them - how regulators will treat their deposits. In most ways, Islamic banks appear well-placed to cope with Basel III, which will be phased in across the globe over the next few years. Most of the banks are from the Gulf and Southeast Asia, where economies are strong.

Zamir  Dr Zamir Iqbal (Head, World Bank Global Center for Islamic Finance, Istanbul)
Zamir heads the World Bank Global Centre for Islamic Finance Development in Istanbul. He has more than 20 years of experience of risk management, capital markets, and asset management at the World Bank Treasury.



Zahid  Mr Zahid ur Rehman Khokhar, Assistant Secretary General IFSB
Zahid has been working with the Islamic Financial Services Board (IFSB) since January 2008 and has more than 15 years of regulatory and standard setting experience in the financial sector. Apart from coordinating with IFSB members and industry stakeholders, he is supervising the research, standard setting and database projects of the IFSB. 


 
Rafe  Rafe Haneed, CEO, HSBC Amanah*
Rafe holds a Bachelor of Law from International Islamic University of Malaysia and a Masters of Law from Harvard Law School, United States of America. He first joined HSBC Investment Bank plc, London in 1999 and thereafter HSBC Financial Services Middle East, Dubai from 2001-2004. He then assumed several positions including as the Head of Global Islamic Finance of ABN Amro Bank NV, Dubai, Head of Islamic Banking of Citigroup Asia and Managing Director, Investments of Fajr Capital before rejoining HSBC Amanah as Managing Director Global Markets for the Asia Pacific region in July 2010. In addition he is currently a member of the Shariah Advisory Council of Securities Commission Malaysia.

Session 2: Islamic Finance - Way Forward for Global Acceptance (16:00 - 17:30)
Islamic financial assets today stand at nearly USD 2 trillion, and have been growing phenomenally. However, in the global context, these assets form merely 1.5% of global financial assets. The panelists will delve into issues and challenges for global acceptance, and the way forward for the Islamic financial services industry.

Humayon  Dr Humayon Dar (CEO, Edbiz Consulting)
Humayon is currently serving as Chairman of Edbiz Corporation, a London-based holding company that has business interests in the Islamic world. He is a leading spokesman for the Islamic financial services industry, and has played lead roles in a number of global initiatives for the development of Islamic finance. 





Faizal  Mr Faizal Karbani (CEO, Simply Shariah UK)
Faizal is the Founder & CEO of Simply Shariah Ltd, a UK firm solely dedicated to providing Sharia-compliant financial solutions along with supporting Islamic finance through recruitment and training. He supported both the technical team advicing the UK Government on tax implications for Sharia-compliant products and the Government consultations on Sharia-compliant student fiance in Britain. 



 Wan-Nursofiza Dr Wan Nursofiza (Director, Asian Institute of Finance)
Wan Nursofiza holds a PhD in Corporate Finance from the University of New England, Australia. She is currently serving as the Director of Strategy and policy development at Asian Institute of Finance, whose book on Islamic banking and finance has been published in three different languages. She was previously attached to INCEIF as a Research Fellow. Prior to joining INCEIF, Wan Nursofiza has been involved in consultancy work and has published many referred journals.
