The Challenge

Create an infographics (information graphic) to help readers understand the impact of COVID-19 pandemic through the visualisation of data. Use provided or any COVID-19 datasets that you may like.

You are given the following four areas of concern to choose from. Please choose ONE to highlight in your infographic:

  • Covid-19 vaccination progress.
  • Impact of Covid-19 on education.
  • Impact of Covid-19 on mental health.
  • Use of technology in the transition to the “new normal”.

The Data Visualisation (DataViz) challenge requires you to analyse COVID-19 data and transform them into data visualisation. You will create an infographic to tell the data story using the data visualisation such as charts and graphs together with images and text.

Free Online Training    

Free online training will be available to help you acquire the knowledge and skills related to data science, visual design and presentation as follows:

  • Introduction to Big Data - Mon, 13 September 2021, 4 - 6 pm
  • Mathematics of Covid-19  - Tues, 14 September 2021, 4 - 6pm
  • Data analytics & visualisation - Wed, 15 September 2021, 4 - 6 pm
  • Infographics Design - Thurs, 16 September 2021, 4 - 6 pm
  • The Art of Presentation - Fri, 17 September, 4 - 6 pm

By joining the workshops, you will get to learn how to use data visualisation and infographic design tools to help you complete your challenge.

Registration can be done through your school representative on: bit.ly/dataviz21.

Only ONE person in charge (school representative) can register for the school. This person in charge can either be the school principal, senior assistant curriculum or a teacher from your school.

This competition is open to ALL schools in Malaysia and students between 15 - 18 years old. Each school is allowed to register up to a maximum of 3 teams. Each team should consist of 2-3 students. In the registration form, each student’s name, class and email contact should be included.

Deadline for student registration: Mon, 6 September 2021 (11:59 PM)

Project Pitch

  • Student registration (please provide name of team members, class and email). 
  • Learn from attending a weeklong training sessions hosted by UNM Faculty of Science and Engineering.
  • Submit an infographic in the form of a png, jpeg or pdf file and provide a short text description that explains:
    • the aim and objectives
    • design rationale, and
    • data story of the infographics in the link: https://bit.ly/preliminaryEntrySubmission.
      (Rule: Infographic should be students’ own original work; use of existing infographic templates are not allowed)
  • After this stage, a list of teams will be shortlisted.
  • Shortlisted team will be required to have a video submission (max. 10 minutes) to explain the infographics they created.
  • Shortlisted will present the video and engage in a Question and Answer session to further explain their ideas in the Virtual Grand Final.
