Description

Spoken Word Poetry and the Revival of the Storyteller in Malaysian Literature in English

This presentation is on the research that was carried out to identify and explore the phenomenon of Malaysian spoken word poetry, or the performance of personal stories composed in the language of poetry. Drawing largely on methodologies informed by folklorists, postcolonial and performance theorists, the study investigates how local spoken word poets use the medium as a way to challenge established narratives, engage with the personal, as well as the concerns of their society at large.

The speaker will discuss the scope of this research, her role as a practitioner-researcher, and a number of challenges that were faced while working on the study. Among the issues that will be addressed are: the rationale for the study, the lack of existing research on Malaysian verbal art, definition(s) of the term penglipurlara and spoken word poetry, selected practitioners within both performance traditions, and further related research.
