Description

School of English Research Talks Series: The Politics of Representation in Nigerian Political Discourse

This research talk presents a discursive analysis of the key social actors embroiled in Nigerian political discourse between 2010 and 2015. This period marks the deadliest phase of Boko Haram’s terror in the region (Global Terrorism Index 2018). Drawing on Norman Fairclough’s approach to critical discourse analysis, Theo van Leeuwen’s social actor network theory, and Michael Halliday’s systemic functional linguistics theory, the talk sets out to reveal the implicit ideological structures and strategies weaved into the discourse. Furthermore, it compares the binary schema of positive self-presentation of in-group social actors to the ‘enemification’ of non-state actors via negative other-presentation. It seeks to contribute to public understanding of the politics surrounding Boko Haram’s portrayal in Nigerian political discourse as well as a general understanding of the implicit processes by which social actors and social action in political discourse are enacted, normalised and legitimised.
