We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic Ph.D. student to develop a novel Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method based on “mesh-less” technology for simulating Fluid Structure Interaction (FSI) problem in engineering applications. The ultimate goal is to apply the method for simulating challenging yet interesting FSI problems such as those encountered in flood mitigation, biological flow environment, etc.

The candidate is expected to develop a fluid-solid coupling algorithm and embed that in the in-house CFD code written in C++. The core numerical method of this code is Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH). Upon embedding the coupling algorithm into the existing in-house code, the new code will then be executed on a parallel computing platform (GPU) so that large scale FSI problems in flood mitigation, biological system etc. can be studied.

Job Requirements:

  • A degree in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or any other relevant field with good academic record, especially in numerical method, fluid & solid mechanics and programming-related modules.
  • Past experience in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and/or Computational Solid Mechanics (CSM) such as Finite Element Method, etc.
  • Interested in programming (C/C++).
  • Willing to explore new research directions.

Financial support

Financial support will be provided: Month stipend (RM 2500/month for 3 years) and tuition waiver.

Candidates interested are encouraged to contact Assoc Prof Ir Dr Ng Khai-Ching (khaiching.ng@nottingham.edu.my) with the current CV/Resume.
