The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus (UNMC) is currently hosting students from four leading UK universities for a four-day leadership and study programme co-organised with the international, intercultural training organisation, Common Purpose. Over a hundred university students from diverse backgrounds and nationalities, including twenty representatives from UNMC, will participate in a packed programme of discussion, debate and project-work. In the opening session today, Dr Sean Matthews, Head of School of Modern Languages and Cultures, joined Sharaad Kuttan of BFM Radio and Yana Rizal of Projek Dialog on a panel concerning Cultural Intelligence. In a feisty and ferocious 90 minutes, debate ranged over a wide range of issues, some of them sensitive, including LGBT rights; FGM; religion; kleptocracy and corruption; international development; Irshad Nanji; colonial guilt; indigenous epistemology; smell; traffic and language. Judging by the number of questions and the energetic involvement of the audience, the session got the week’s programme off to a flying start.
