UNMC Dr Thomas invited to INUSHARTS

Alongside professors from the University of Washington, Utrecht, Melbourne and the National University of Singapore, Thomas Barker (SMLC) was an invited plenary speaker at the University of Indonesia’s undergraduate symposium called INUSHARTS. INUSHARTS was held at the University of Indonesia Depok campus from 29-30 August 2016. The keynote talk was delivered by Professor Abidin Kusno from York University, Canada. INUSHARTS (International Undergraduate Symposium on Humanities and Arts 2016) represents an initiative by the Faculty of Humanities to develop the research capabilities of UI students.

Dr Barker spoke on the topic of creative industries policy in Malaysia and its relevance to Indonesia. Noting that Malaysia has embarked upon a programme of creative industries development, the presentation discusses the current direction of policy and funding programmes. Of note is the way in which creative industries policy has been focused on funding rather than infrastructure and facilities development and the ways in which digital technologies and media have been prioritised.
