Biography

Professor Peter A. Leggat, AM, ADC, PhD SAust, DrPH JCU, MD Qld, FAFPHM, FFPH RCP(UK), FPHAA, FACTM, FACAsM, FFTM FFEWM ACTM, FFTM RCPSG, FACRRM, FISTM, FSIA, FACE, FAICD, FRAS, FRGS, Hon.FFPM RCP(UK), Hon.FACTM, Hon.FFTM ACTM, is Honorary Professor in the School of Environmental and Geographical Sciences, University of Nottingham Malaysia. He is currently Professor and Director of the World Safety Organization Collaborating Centre for Disaster Health and Emergency Response in the College of Public Health, Medical and Veterinary Sciences, James Cook University (JCU), Australia. He has a strong interest in health workforce development in public health and tropical medicine, but also in related areas such as aerospace and travel medicine. He has consulted with various organisations, including the World Health Organization.

As part of a Fulbright Scholarship, Professor Leggat completed the Primary Care Faculty Development Fellowship Program at Michigan State University.and undertook research at the Mike Monroney Aeronautical Centre. He is also a former Fulbright Ambassador and current Fulbright Advisor. His research encompasses a broad range of topics including public health aspects of disasters and space applications in disaster response. He has published >500 journal papers (>6000 citations; h-index=39; i10-index=144), and >90 chapters, as well as >35 books, directories and proceedings. He has presented >400 papers at national and international conferences.

Professor Leggat holds a number of professional and other Board appointments. These include the JCU Academic Board, International Society of Travel Medicine (President-Elect), The Australasian College of Aerospace Medicine (Dean of Education), The Australasian College of Tropical Medicine (ACTM) (Immediate Past-President), and the Faculty of Travel Medicine, (Dean), ACTM. He is also the Australian Point of Contact for the Royal Astronomical Society (UK). He has served more than 20 years on the Board of the World Safety Organization (Director-General, 1997-99) between 1989 and 2018.

Professor Leggat has been the recipient of numerous awards and honours, including admission as a Member of the Order of Australia in 2013 and Promotion to Commander of the Order of St John in 2016.

Current Research

Our research focuses on resilience and vulnerability to hazards such as floods, fires, drought and cyclones, which can affect how people, communities and governments prepare for these events. We are also interested in geospatial applications in disaster response.

Past Research

Past research funded by the Australian Government has focused on disaster medical assistance teams. We have also received World Health Organization funding to review a Framework for a Public Health Emergency Operations Centre.
