The first Biosciences Summer School, run by the University of Nottingham Malaysia campus (UNMC) in July 2014, was a great success.  We hosted twenty students from the UK campus, introducing them to Malaysian culture and hospitality and, through a mixture of cultural and educational sessions and visits, enabled them to explore the local diet and understand  the impact of the diet on future food and nutritional security.

This year, 2015, the summer school is being hosted by the School of Biosciences in the UK.

Sutton Bonington campus will be home to 11 students from UNMC for two weeks in July, where they will gain an insight into the diets and lifestyles of citizens of the UK.  They will be researching the question  ‘What is the role of animal products in the UK diet  –  how sustainable is it to consume these products, and what are the implications for future health’.

A range of field trips, visits to farms and survey work in local towns will form the basis of the research.  Students will also take part in the Nutrition Society annual summer conference, which is also hosted at the Sutton Bonington campus during this fortnight.

Watch this space for more updates.  Once the summer school starts, there will be daily blogs from the students.

How sustainable is our current diet?

What is the future for animal products?
