The Centre

About

Alongside our partners at Crops for the Future and Bioversity International, the University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus is a proud partner and host of the Crops for the Future Research Centre (CFFRC).

With nearly US $40 million in funding from the Malaysian Government, CFFRC will be the very first international research institution devoted entirely to the study of under-utilised plants.

Facilities

CFFRC will be an iconic, independent, international institution featuring a diverse range of facilities:

  • biomes, polytunnels and growth chambers: which will allow plants to be grown in manipulated climates and environments
  • water features: which will allow the study of tropical swamp plants
  • crops: to give scale to alternative plants and test their viability for large-scale growth and production

As the focus of CFFRC is on alternative and under-utilised plants, it is our goal to build unique institution which reflects these interests through the use of sustainable and alternative building materials and technologies. The Centre will be carbon neutral and energy efficient using green technologies to conserve energy, capture rainwater and use alternative biomaterials.

In addition to new state-of-the-art research facilities CFFRC will have access to 50 hectares of agricultural land alongside the existing campus to develop field research on underutilised crops.
