MINDSET PUBLIC TALKS – NOV 2015

Environmental Cost of Food: The Delicate Balance Between Food Security and Natural Resources

Guest Speaker: Dr Pierpaolo Duce (Italy’s Nat. Research Council)

With special response by Prof. Sayed Azam-Ali (Crops For the Future)

Time: Wed 25 Nov, 6 PM

Venue: University of Nottingham Kuala Lumpur Teaching Centre (KLTC),

Level 2, Chulan Tower, No 3 Jalan Conlay, Kuala Lumpur

With more than seven billion people in the planet, need to create a balance between food security and natural resources. The environmental implications of agrifood chains is a strategic issue in a local/territorial perspective: for both farms and business companies, the improvement of their environmental performances is an increasingly competitive element and the environmentalvalorization of rural systems represents a key factor particularly for marginal area development. With the aim of enhancing this debate, this talk will focus on the environmental cost of food and the life cycle assessment method. Based on the life cycle thinking, this approach allows measuring food sustainability under all its aspects/dimensions.

Dr Pierpaolo Duce has been responsible for the Institute of Biometeorology, National Research Council, Italy, since 2005. His research focuses on the development of methods for monitoring and modelling Mediterranean forest and agricultural ecosystems, aimed at protecting and sustainably using agroenvironmental resources. He has been responsible for several European research projects devoted to the evaluation of agricultural and forest carbon sinks, the assessment of climate risk in agroforestecosystems, and the analysis of the environmental performances of agricultural production and food products humanity.

Prof. Sayed Azam Ali has been the Chief Executive Officer of CFFRC since August 2011. He is also the Chair in Global Food Security at the University of Nottingham. Professor Azam Ali became Professor of Tropical Agronomy in 2006 at the University of Nottingham, where he co ordinated three major EU funded Programmes and was a principal partner in two other EU programmes. In 2008, he was appointed as Vice Provost (Research and Internationalisation) at UNMC, where he coordinated the successful bid to co-host the global Crops for the Future (CFF) organisation. In 2011, CFFRC became the world's first centre research on underutilised plants for food and non food uses awards.
