“The Political Novel”: A Talk by Dr Mohammad Safaei  

The political novel is a growing genre and a field of research in literary studies. In his presentation, Dr Mohammad Safaei examines the political novel in the context of other literary genres and historical trends. He discusses, in specific, the structure of dictatorship and its religious and political axes in three novels: Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell, The Autumn of the Patriarch by Gabriel Garcia Marquez and The Feast of the Goat by Mario Vargas Llosa.

About the speaker: 
Dr Safaei is an assistant professor of literature at the School of English, UNM. He is interested in the intersections between literature and other disciplines including politics, history, and religion. His research has covered a variety of topics and themes such as political theology, micropolitics, fascism, space, time, existence, and literary revisionism. His work has been published in several SCOPUS indexed journals including International Journal of English Studies, Romance Studies, 3L: The Southeast Asian Journal of English Language Studies and Critique: Studies in Contemporary Fiction
