Business School organises panel discussion on Big Data

NUBS-Big-Data'

Nottingham University Business School (NUBS) Malaysia convened a panel session on 5 June 2015, at The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus' partner institution PSB Academy Singapore, to discuss  the role of 'big data' and analytics in business.

The session, entitled “What’s So Big About Data?” was part of NUBS Malaysia's two-day series of talks and panel discussions, where it was attended by MBA students from the Business School's campuses of the United Kingdom and Malaysia, as well as those based at PSB Academy. Scheduled from 5-6 June 2015, the events coincided with the UK MBA students' study tour to Malaysia and Singapore, as part of the School's regular engagements with industry leaders to enable MBA students to gain insights that bridge theory and practice.

The panel members, moderated by Dr Hsin-Vonn Seow, Associate Professor of Operations Research, were asked to share their experiences on how analytics has influenced their industry. Pankaj Sinha, Associate VP & Head of Operations, Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages spoke on his experience in using the results of data analytics on the decision making support in Coca-Cola in India. Jitinder Magoon, Chief Management and Strategic Advisor, Zecon Medicare Kuala Lumpur presented a case study showing how healthcare systems can benefit from data analytics, while Kenneth Khoo, Vice-President, APAC Region, Digital Route shared his experience of being tasked with modelling and using the results of data analytics in the telecommunications industry.

Bill Lee, Partner, Process Improvement, Information Management and Advanced Analytics, Ernst & Young Advisory Singapore, having presented earlier on data analytics and governance as a foreword to the panel discussion, also spoke on the challenges of data privacy and dilemmas surrounding the use of data collected for the greater good.

Lee also commented on the lack of sufficient talent in the area of data analytics. He addressed a common misconception that one needs to have graduated with a specific analytics-related degree in order to be eligible to work in this seemingly niche industry, and encouraged MBA students to explore the possibility of developing themselves further to make their mark in the area of data analytics.

The panelists are also members of NUBS Malaysia's Industry Advisory Board, which provides strategic advice to support the School's current work and future developments, as well as developing strong links with the business and policy makers to ensure the continuing relevance of the School's activities.

“This panel session is part of the School’s efforts in ensuring that our MBA students gain practical insights into real-world business practices. The rise of data analytics as a key tool for business decision-making is something which spans across various business disciplines. Today’s panelists provided a broad view of the related issues in a diverse range of areas,” said Professor Khong Kok Wei, Director of the MBA Programme at NUBS Malaysia.

“As a global business school, we are also delighted to have been able to share the insightful discussions with our MBA students in UK and Singapore,” Professor Khong added.

Nottingham University Business School has campuses in the UK, China and Malaysia, with the MBA  programme offered in the UK, Malaysia, and the University’s overseas partner institution in Singapore, PSB Academy.
