Tan Sri Zakri Abdul Hamid, Science Adviser to Government of Malaysia was conferred with the honorary degree of Doctor of Science from The University of Nottingham at the Graduation Ceremony held on 25 July 2015 at Putrajaya International Convention Centre.
Tan Sri Zakri also serves in the UN Secretary-General’s Scientific Advisory Board and is the Joint Chairman, Malaysian Industry-Government Group for High Technology (MIGHT); Chairman, Malaysian Biotechnology Corporation (BIOTECHCORP); Chairman, National Professors Council; Chairman of the Board of Advisers, UNU-International Institute on Global Health and Pro-Chancellor, Universiti Perguruan Sultan Idris, received the degree from Professor Karen Cox, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of The University of Nottingham.
“Tan Sri is renowned in the international scientific community, and has earned the recognition as one of the most accomplished research scientists and science administrators in the developing world. He has long standing service and commitment in various Malaysian and international scientific bodies and we are proud to present this award to Tan Sri Zakri today,” said Professor Christine Ennew, CEO and Provost of The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus at the ceremony.
On the international front, Tan Sri Zakri served as the Secretary-General of the Society for the Advancement of Breeding Research in Asia and Oceania (SABRAO), a leading scientific society devoted to the basic and practical aspects of breeding research in economic organisms. From 1997 to 1999, Tan Sri Zakri chaired the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA) of the CBD.
UNMC Graduation Ceremony
UNMC graduation witnessed the graduation of about 900 undergraduate and postgraduate students from The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences; Faculty of Engineering and Faculty of Science. The event was hosted by Professor Karen Cox, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of The University of Nottingham and Professor Christine Ennew.
“Graduation starts with a lifelong journey with the University and I encourage you to continue to engage with the 250,000 University of Nottingham graduates worldwide to widen your network for professional prospects and to stay in touch with the many friends you have made,” said Professor Christine Ennew while addressing the graduates.
Lord Dearing Award
The Graduation Ceremony also witnessed, Patrick Joseph, Director of Academic Services at UNMC receiving the University’s Lord Dearing Award for his contribution in supporting student learning experience at UNMC.
The Lord Dearing Award is conferred to staff of the University who makes a world-class contribution towards creating a student learning environment which is nurturing as well as challenging, creative and innovative.
The graduation ceremony was also attended by Her Excellency Mrs. Salma Kikwete, First Lady of Tanzania; His Excellency Dr. Aziz Mlima, High Commissioner of the United Republic of Tanzania in Malaysia, YM Tengku Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Ahmad Rithauddeen Bin Tengku Ismail, Chairman of The University of Nottingham in Malaysia Sdn Bhd, Y.Bhg. Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Lodin Wok Kamaruddin, Group Managing Director of Boustead Holding Berhad , Professor Stephen Doughty, Vice Provost (Teaching & Learning) and Professor Graham Kendall, Vice Provost (Research & Knowledge Transfer) at UNMC.
