Dr Nafis Alam, Associate Professor at The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus (UNMC), won an award in the International category at The University of Nottingham’s Knowledge Exchange and Impact Awards 2016.

The University’s Knowledge Exchange and Impact Awards held at The University of Nottingham UK recently, recognised new ideas and technologies being developed in collaboration with industry and commerce, and the work done in communicating science across all media platforms.

The aim of the Awards is to recognise outstanding knowledge exchange activities amongst academic staff across The University of Nottingham. The ‘International’ category is for academic staff at The University of Nottingham Ningbo China and UNMC who has undertaken significant knowledge exchange work, and the award is given to the academic from each campus who has made the biggest contribution to building the reputation for knowledge exchange at UNNC and UNMC respectively during the last year. There was one award winner per campus from a final shortlist of five.

Another winner in the International category is the Executive Education team from The University of Nottingham Business School Ningbo for their China Rolling Stock Corporation (CRRC) International Talent Development Programme.

Dr Nafis Alam from Nottingham University Business School at UNMC has led the development of Islamic finance as a new business discipline at UNMC where the MSc Investment and Islamic Finance programme was launched in 2013, and a research centre focusing on Islamic business and finance, The Centre for Islamic Business and Finance Research (CIBFR) was established in 2014.

The CIBFR, led by Dr Nafis, brought in CEOs from local and international Islamic banks, think tanks and also from the World Bank to engage with The University of Nottingham.

“I am very humbled to receive this award after all the hard work from my colleagues as well, into the development of Islamic finance as a new discipline, and its positive impact towards the financial services sector, researchers in this field as well as students,” said Dr Nafis.

“Research on Islamic banking and finance is highly relevant in Malaysia as it aims to be a leading global hub for Islamic finance and at UNMC, it is one of the key research priority areas,” he said. Additionally, Dr Nafis noted that, from a Malaysian perspective, Islamic finance is one of the sectors that not only adds value to the economy but offers an alternative to both businesses and the public. In this regard, CIBFR is working closely with industry stakeholders to spearhead research and education in the Islamic finance sector. CIBFR’s success at a global level has been a testimony to this.

“The breadth of work undertaken by our researchers across campuses and the impact of their work is truly astounding. We are particularly proud of the award clinched by Nafis in his efforts to foster high level industry collaboration in the global financial services sector,” said Professor Christine Ennew, CEO and Provost at UNMC.
