Title: Patients’ Experience of Insulin Therapy for Type 2 Diabetes Management    

Abstract:

Aim

The aim of this study is to explore the lived experience of Malaysian Type 2 Diabetes patients in particular patients on insulin therapy.

Objectives

The proposed study will focus on type 2 diabetes patients in a public hospital in the Federal territory of Malaysia and explore their experiences of using insulin as part of their glycemic control, and develop theory with regards to their perceptions of health, wellbeing and quality of life; and identify the barriers and facilitators for type 2 diabetes patients to initiating insulin therapy. The objective is to increase the focus on the patient, especially the psychological, social and behavioural barriers to effective diabetes management.

Methods

The proposed research methods are qualitative and will utilise interpretivist paradigm and employ a phenomenological approach to collect data. Data analysis will adopt the principles of grounded theory and narrative approaches. Participants with type 2 diabetes who have been on insulin therapy will be selected using purposive sampling method. Interviews will be used as the main data collection method to develop theory to explain these phenomena.
