The Nottingham University Business School (NUBS) and the Early Career Research Network (ECRN) are pleased to announce an Interdisciplinary Symposium featuring Professor Luiz Moutinho Marketing and Management, University of Glasgow.

The symposium seeks to assemble academic staff and postgraduate students from a wide spectrum of research interests, including Mathematics, Economics, Psychology and Neuroscience, Communications, Computer Science, Business Management and beyond. The discussions will feature Professor Luis Moutinho’s work with American marketing author, consultant and S.C. Johnson Distinguished Professor of International Marketing, Philip Kotler on Future Trends in Marketing. The symposium will also explore the role of Neuroscience in Management and Marketing and the dynamics of brand engagement using social media.

In addition to the interdisciplinary networking opportunities among UNMC colleagues that this symposium affords, invited delegates from other local and regional academic institutions will also be present, including from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Monash University and Taylor's University.

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

Day 1: 9 June 2014, Monday

EVENT 1.1: 'Neuroscience, Anthropomorphism and Accountability' 
10:00-12:00 in EA23 - Block E (FASS, Orange Building)

Prof Moutinho will talk about his ongoing research on Cognitive Neuroscience and Anthropomorphism in Management and Marketing. The session will be followed by discussion, chaired by the School of Psychology.

EVENT 1.2: 'Future Trends in Marketing – Going Beyond the Market Share'
14:00-16:00 in EA29 - Block E (FASS, Orange Building)

This keynote presentation is based on collaborative work between Professor Luiz Moutinho and Professor Philip Kotler, Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University and will be followed by a Q&A and discussion by NUBS Malaysia.  

Day 2: 10 June 2014, Tuesday

EVENT 2: 'Brand Engagement in Social Media & Measuring Impact Using Memetic Algorithms' (Co-hosted by the Centre for the Study of Communications & Culture).
10:00-12:00 in EA23 - Block E (FASS, Orange Building)

Professor Moutinho will share findings from recent research exploring the use of various modeling and mathematical techniques to explore patterns of social media use in marketing as well as patterns of brand engagement. The presentation will be followed by a Q&A and discussion moderated by the CSCC.  

Day 3: 11 June 2014, Wednesday

Drop-In Sessions with Prof. Luiz Moutinho 

To complement his guest lectures, Luiz will be available for scheduled drop-in sessions on the afternoon of 11 June 2014 (time and venue will be announced during Days 1/2) to discuss mutual research interests and epistemology surrounding the aforementioned topics.

About the Speaker:
Professor Moutinho completed his PhD at the University of Sheffield in 1982 and has subsequently held posts at Cardiff Business School, University of Wales College of Cardiff, Cleveland State University, Ohio, USA, Northern Arizona University, USA and California State University, USA. Luiz has also held Visiting Professorship positions across the globe including at the University of Vilnius, Lithuania; University of Innsbruck, Austria; Otago University, New Zealand; University of Aarhus, Denmark; Bled School of Management, Slovenia; University of Aveiro, Portugal; Gyor University, Hungary; Feng Chia University, Taiwan; Technical University of Lisbon, Portugal; FGV-Sao Paulo, Brazil; Catholic University, Brazil among others. Between 1987 and 1989 he was the Director of the Doctoral Programmes at the Confederation of Scottish Business Schools and at the Cardiff Business School between 1993 and 1996.  He has also served as Director of the Doctoral Programme in Management at the University of Glasgow between 1996 and 2004. Luiz is the Founding Editor of the Journal of Modelling in Management.

One of Professor Moutinho’s primary areas of academic research relates modelling processes of consumer behaviour.  He has developed a number of conceptual models over the years in areas such as tourism destination decision processes, automated banking, supermarket patronage, among other areas.  The testing of these research models has been based on the application of many different statistical, computer and mathematical modelling techniques ranging from multidimensional scaling, multinomial logit generalised linear models (GLMs) and linear structural relations to neural networks, ordered probit, simulated ammealing, tabu search, genetic algorithms, and fuzzy logic. He has also authored a number of publications on the applications of cognitive neuroscience in consumer behaviour.
