The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus Centre for the Study of Communications & Culture (CSCC Facebook) in association with Malaysiakini and the Southeast Asian Press Alliance invite you to a public forum - Powerful Voices: Strengthening Democracy Through Investigative Journalism. Great journalism, the kind that provides a rigorous account of people who are in power, regards the information needs of all people as legitimate, prevents liars from being unaccountable and leading nations into catastrophe, and produces a wide range of informed opinions on the most important issues of our times is essential to any democracy. But this kind of journalism does not emerge out of thin air – it requires time, resources, independence, and access to information. Without these supports, the news we read merely fills a hole or becomes the tool of the already powerful. Before you lepak with the weekend’s news, join us to find out more about what helps investigative journalism happen, what gets in its way, and what producing it involves. Dr Mark L. Hunter, co-founder of the Global Investigative Journalism Network, will share his experiences and expertise, followed by a panel discussion and Q&A exploring the likelihood of Malaysia ever becoming one of the world’s best democracies without a healthy culture of strong journalism and powerful voices.
