Welcome to the New Student Induction page where we provide all the help you need to ensure you have the best possible start to university life, IT wise.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, UNM started digitally supported guided learning (DSGL) from 30 Mar, until further notice. In the current DSGL approach, lectures are pre-recorded and uploaded in Moodle (via Echo360 a.k.a. ENGAGE). A Microsoft Team Class will be created for each module. All lectures and tutorials will be scheduled to be conducted online through Microsoft Teams video conference.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. What is digitally supported guided learning (DSGL)

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, UNM started digitally supported guided learning (DSGL) from 30 Mar, until further notice. In the current DSGL approach, lecturers will pre-recorded lectures that are uploaded in Moodle (via Echo360 ENGAGE). A Microsoft Team Class will be created for each module. All lectures and tutorials will be scheduled to be conducted online through Microsoft Teams video conference.

 

Q2. What is the minimum hardware and internet requirement for accessing Microsoft Teams for my lectures/tutorials?

You will require a working computer with a minimum processor speed of 1.6GHz, 2 GB RAM along with microphone, speakers and webcam. You will also need a good internet connection of at least 10Mbps or higher. For more details and for specifications of Mac and Mobile devices please click here.

 

Q3. What are the minimum requirement to access Moodle?

Below is the minimum requirements to access Moodle:

  • Computer (either Windows or Apple) with broadband Internet connection (at least 2Mb is suggested)
  • Moodle can be accessed on web connected Mobile devices (IPhone, IPad, Android Phone or Tablet).

Due to the limitations of mobile internet it may not be possible to view all files in your module, load audio/video or upload files.

4G internet connection (H+ or greater) is suggested as a minimum. It is best to use MobileSafari or Google Chrome browsers.

  • Web browser: Most recent Google Chrome, recent Mozilla Firefox (or minimum version 25), recent Safari (or minimum version 6), Internet Explorer 11 or later , Edge.

Disclaimer: Not all Browsers may support all functionalities in Moodle, E.g. Chrome may not support keyboard shortcuts while submitting assignments.

  • The browser must be set to accept ALL cookies and to show the newest version of a page. Click here for more details.
  • Pop-up blocker should be disabled

Note that some toolbars such as Google and Yahoo! may have popup blockers by default - it is best not to have such toolbars if possible.

  • JavaScript should be enabled

 

Q4. Can I get free copy of Microsoft Office on my own computer or mobile device?

Yes, the University’s subscription of Office 365 entitles each staff and student to download and install Office Professional (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, etc.) to up to 5 devices. You can obtain the installer through the Office365 portal, or visit our simple guide.

 

Q5. What other software can I get for my own computer?

As a student, you are also entitled to download and install the following software on your own computer:

  • SPSS
  • MATLAB
