Dr Gayathry Venkiteswaran, Assistant Professor at the School of Media, Languages and Cultures (SMLC) at University of Nottingham Malaysia (UNM) was recently awarded a grant amounting to RM60,000 under the Democracy Discourse Series to conduct a study on ‘Promoting digital media literacy and political awareness for youths in Selangor, Malaysia’.

This 18-month project, supported by the Centre for the Study of Communications and Culture, commenced on 2 September will be invaluable for the University especially in research and knowledge exchange.

According to Dr Gayathry, a portion of the grant money will be channelled towards recruiting students from UNM and SMLC as research assistants. This move is expected to further strengthen the school’s portfolio and research culture. Gayathry has worked with civil society groups, including students and teachers, especially in the field of media literacy, digital media and access to information. The recent constitutional amendment to lower the voting age is a milestone in Malaysia’s politics that should encourage wider discussions and participation.

”This is a great opportunity to involve students directly in research activities, especially towards shaping public discourses on youth and politics by the youths themselves.”
