NUBS Malaysia hosted the 2019 edition of the ‘Nottingham In the City’ Alumni Reception for alumni and invited guests of Nottingham University Business School Malaysia, held on 6 July 2019 at the University of Nottingham Malaysia’s Teaching Centre in Kuala Lumpur.

The reception, the second held by NUBS Malaysia, brought together alumni of the School, as well as industry professionals and faculty members, in a casual setting aimed at expanding networks and sharing expertise. The event was attended by students and alumni of the School, and members of the Nottingham Graduates Association Malaysia.

The evening kicked off with an opening note by Deputy Director of Taught Postgraduate Programmes Dr Anita Chakrabarty and welcoming remarks by the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Professor Lee Chew Ging. A highlight of the event was the ‘Conversations’ series that featured guest speaker Robert Boxwell, director of international management and professional development consultancy Opera Advisors, who spoke on salient issues regarding the US-China Trade War and ways of strategising amid possible changes in the global economic environment.

For many alumni, it was an opportunity to broaden their network towards developing their professional and personal connections with former classmates and other MBA graduates from differing cohorts, as well as with faculty members from the Business School.

MBA Finance alumnus Haw Hui Mun, Senior Relationship Manager, Business Banking at Bank Pembangunan Malaysia Berhad, mused, “The value of the Nottingham MBA goes on beyond graduation – not only has it unlocked other career opportunities for me, it has also made my Saturdays and after-work hours interesting with meet-ups such as this.”

Another alumnus, social entrepreneur Sameeta Kaur of Virtual Health Angels, which runs workshops on art wellness for children and corporations, said, “The event was a good opportunity for me to network and connect with other graduates – I look forward to more such meetings. Thank you so much for giving graduates room for continuous growth and development.”

President of the Nottingham Graduates Association Malaysia, Goh Hoon Huar, said, “I am thrilled by this initiative undertaken by the Business School. I enjoyed the networking, the interesting talk by the speaker, and the timely updates on the University by faculty members. It was a rewarding Saturday for me and I look forward to more of such events.”

According to Dean of Nottingham University Business School Malaysia Dr Lau Chee Kwong, “We are delighted that the Nottingham in the City 2019 event has brought together many alumni of the Business School in an evening of reunion and reminiscence.”

“We are also pleased that the event has allowed faculty members of the School to reconnect with former students, forging connections that will no doubt lead to more alumni engagement opportunities in the future.”
