Sue Yee, a former undergraduate student (2015) from the Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering, University of Nottingham Malaysia, and Tin Fong Yun, the founder of Zero Waste have been awarded the prestigious Commonwealth Points of Light for their outstanding achievement in waste reduction awareness and education.

The award certificate, signed by Queen Elizabeth II, was presented by the Earl of Wessex, Prince Edward, at a ceremony during the special screening of BBC’s Blue Planet II series at Quill City Mall Kuala Lumpur on 10 September 2019 Sue Yee was co-founder of Zero Waste Malaysia (ZWM), a registered non-profit organisation that promotes sustainable living. The organisation acts as a platform to provide Malaysians information and resources about living a zero waste/less waste lifestyle.

“As an alumnus of University of Nottingham Malaysia, I am grateful that our work as a non-profit organisation that is fully powered by volunteers is being recognised, and we have nothing to say except “THANK YOU” to our more than 100 volunteers who have been involved in this movement for the past four years. It’s the time and effort that you have put in that has pushed ZWM to move forward” Sue Yee said.

About Points of Light

Points of Light are outstanding individual volunteers – people who are making a change in their community. Every week day the UK Prime Minister recognises an inspirational volunteer with the Daily Point of Light award.

First established by President George H. W. Bush in 1990, over 6,000 US Points of Light have been recognised in the USA. UK Points of Light was developed in partnership with the US programme and launched in the Cabinet Room at 10 Downing Street in April 2014.

Since then hundreds of people have been named Points of Light by the  UKPrime Minister, highlighting an enormous array of innovative and inspirational volunteering across the length and breadth of Britain.

Doing everything from tackling knife crime, to supporting families of dementia patients, our UK Points of Light are fundraising, awareness raising, problem solving heroes who all had an idea they decided to make a reality. Their actions have changed lives and their stories can inspire thousands more to get involved or start their own initiatives.
