The University of Nottingham Malaysia is delighted to announce the appointment of Professor Ir Dr Mohd Shahir Liew as the new Vice Provost of Research and Knowledge Exchange, effective December 1, 2023.
Prof Shahir brings a wealth of experience to his new role, having earned his BSc and PhD (Structural Dynamics) at Texas Tech University in the United States, with a focus on offshore engineering and structural dynamics. His professional journey spans engineering consultancy in both the USA and Malaysia, where he successfully established his own companies. He had also successfully implemented two start-ups in Indonesia before venturing into academics. A registered engineer in the USA and Malaysia, as well as a Chartered Engineer in the UK, Prof Shahir transitioned to academia in 2009.
Throughout his journey in academia, Prof Shahir has held various senior academic and leadership positions in Civil and Environmental Engineering, as well as in Geosciences and Petroleum Engineering. Notably, in his previous role as Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Research, Innovation and Commercialisation (DVCRIC) at Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP), he played a pivotal role in shaping and executing UTP's research and enterprise strategy. His efforts were instrumental in fostering collaborative and interdisciplinary networks that extended well beyond the traditional boundaries of engineering, thereby contributing to the growth of UTP’s research income.

In his new capacity as the Vice Provost of Research and Knowledge Exchange at the University of Nottingham Malaysia, Prof Shahir will continue to advance the institution's research and knowledge exchange strategies. His responsibilities include spearheading collaborative initiatives, fostering interdisciplinary partnerships, and steering the university toward greater achievements in research and knowledge exchange initiatives.
