During the summer of 2025, Ms. Shirley Ng and Mr. Shahjalal Mosharof, undergraduate students from the School of Computer and Mathematical Sciences, completed an enriching internship with EDAG, a leading engineering and technology company. The opportunity was made possible through a connection facilitated by Dr. Simon Lau, Assistant Professor at the School.

During their internship, Shirley and Shahjalal developed Emotion Visualise (emoV) — an innovative system that uses advanced emotion detection technology to analyse customer facial expressions in real time. The tool provides businesses with valuable insights into customer satisfaction, engagement, and overall sentiment, helping to enhance user experience across various interactions with products, services, or environments.

Their impressive creation, emoV, was also showcased at the recent Selangor Smart City & Digital Economy Convention (SDEC) 2025

For many first-year undergraduates, such a project might seem daunting. However, Shirley and Shahjalal rose to the challenge with enthusiasm and perseverance. Throughout the internship, they quickly adapted to an industry setting, learning to manage projects, collaborate effectively, and apply DevOps practices used in professional software development.

Reflecting on her experience, Ms. Shirley Ng shared:

“What I enjoyed most about the internship was the opportunity to work in an agile team alongside professionals who were always ready to guide and give constructive feedback. It was both challenging and rewarding to learn directly from them. Managing smaller tasks while contributing to major project deliveries pushed me to improve how I manage my time and priorities to meet sprint goals. Through this internship, I’ve gained confidence in communicating my work and ideas clearly to the team, while also practicing industry standards and workplace ethics that I rarely encounter in university. It gave me valuable insights into what the real-world working environment looks like, especially in full-stack development where I got to design end-to-end solutions. This experience has inspired me to pursue a future career in software development as I continue to build more experiences in the years ahead.”

Mr. Shahjalal Mosharof echoed the sentiment, highlighting the collaborative and supportive company culture:

“I really liked the company culture because the seniors at my internship were very welcoming. We often played board games with the seniors from the Embedded Department, which made the environment friendly and enjoyable. During the internship, I also worked side by side with my classmate Shirley — whom I didn’t know before — and it was an enjoyable experience working and learning together. As we worked toward delivering the final product, we often had to learn new things on the fly. Learning how Kong, the API gateway, worked and how to set it up was quite challenging but very rewarding. This experience strengthened my foundational programming and problem-solving skills and gave me confidence in developing enterprise-grade products for real-world clients using modern web technologies. It also helped confirm my interest in pursuing a career as a software developer.”

The internship not only strengthened their technical and professional skills but also provided valuable preparation for their Year 2 Software Engineering Group Project module, a flagship component of the second-year curriculum.

This experience exemplifies UNM’s commitment to hands-on learning and industry collaboration, ensuring students are well-prepared to apply cutting-edge technologies to real-world challenges.

On behalf of the School and the University, we congratulate Shirley and Shahjalal on their successful internship experience. Their growth throughout the programme showcases the value of hands-on learning and the strong partnership between academia and industry.
