Perak, 25 September 2025 – The University of Nottingham Malaysia (UNM) achieved an impressive milestone at the Malaysia Rocket CanSat Competition 2025, securing third place in Category 1 (University Category) at the team’s debut appearance.

Hosted at ILD Kg Gajah and FELCRA Seberang Perak, this international aerospace engineering challenge was organised by the High Energy Materials Research Laboratory (HEMRL). The competition offers students a unique opportunity to design, build, and launch rockets and miniature satellite payloads under real-world conditions.

A Global Platform for Future Aerospace Engineers

The competition is designed to test both technical expertise and practical execution with participation from Malaysian students and other Asian countries.

In Category 1, participants focused on rocket design and launch systems, covering propulsion, stability, recovery systems, and launch operations without the integration of CanSat payloads. Each team was also required to present detailed technical documentation, including a Flight Sequence Report (FSR) and a Launch Readiness Review (LRR), to a panel of academic and industry experts before launch approval.

UNM’s Strong Debut

The UNM team’s achievement marks its first entry into the competition and reflects the university’s growing presence in the international rocketry community.

The UNM participants included 5 Mechanical, Materials, and Manufacturing Engineering students:

  • Mak Kwan Ming – Ejection System Development Lead

  • Phuah Ee Sern – Manufacturing and Workflow Lead

  • Lam Wei Heng – Project & Team Oversight Lead

  • Sheldon Anton – Technical and Simulation Lead

  • Joel Yaw Yu Lon – Video Production Lead

Together, they successfully designed, assembled, and launched their rocket called Aeronotts under strict performance and safety criteria.

Looking Ahead

This achievement is a testament to UNM’s commitment to fostering hands-on engineering education and nurturing the next generation of aerospace innovators. By participating in global challenges like the Malaysia Rocket CanSat Competition, UNM students gain exposure to advanced engineering practices, teamwork, and problem-solving in high-pressure environments.
