Guilin, 16 September 2025 — The University of Nottingham Malaysia (UNM) was honoured to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Guangxi University, one of China’s Double First-Class Universities. The MoU will explore greater collaboration in academic exchange, articulation programmes and joint research. Potential areas of research cooperation include AI, applied economics, bioscience engineering, marine studies and more.
The partnership between the two institutions underscores a strong synergy where both are regionally anchored, internationally connected, and committed to nurturing talent and innovation across borders.
The University of Nottingham Malaysia was honoured to be invited to the China–ASEAN Mayor Forum 2025, held in Guilin, Guangxi Province of China where the MoU took place. It was co-signed by Professor David FitzPatrick, Provost and CEO of UNM, and Professor Xiao Jianzhuang, Vice President of Guangxi University and Member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Guangxi University Committee.
The event brought together mayors from Malaysia, Brunei, Cambodia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, and Timor-Leste, alongside representatives from the ASEAN Secretariat, several Chinese government agencies, and enterprise leaders, all contributing to the vision of stronger regional collaboration.

Professor David FitzPatrick remarked that this partnership will not only open more academic opportunities for students from both universities but also contribute to the growing ASEAN-China education corridor, promoting sustainable and impactful academic exchange.
UNM’s participation in the China-ASEAN Mayor Forum and the signing of the MOU underscore its ongoing commitment to expanding global partnerships, enhancing institutional visibility in China, and creating transformative opportunities for students and researchers.
