The School of Humanities at the University of Nottingham Malaysia (UNM) recently partnered with CelcomDigi to enhance critical media literacy among students through the telecommunications company’s S.A.F.E. (Smart. Aware. Fortify. Empathy.) Internet Corner campaign, which is part of a broader digital safety awareness initiative.

The partnership involves students in the International Communications Studies programme and its third-year module, Writing for the Media. In this module, students produce journalistic narratives across four Instagram Reels that critique common hype and misconceptions surrounding artificial intelligence (AI).

The assignment challenges students to translate complex technological issues into clear, public-facing media while reinforcing the campaign’s focus on ethical and responsible AI use.

Students participating in the module were briefed about the initiative on 2 March 2026, with Philip Ling, Head of Sustainability at CelcomDigi, present to introduce the campaign and its objectives.

The S.A.F.E. Internet Corner is part of CelcomDigi’s wider effort to empower young people with the knowledge and practical tools to navigate the digital world safely and responsibly. The initiative raises awareness of online risks such as scams, data privacy concerns, misinformation, and the ethical use of technology in the age of AI.

As part of the initiative, a S.A.F.E. booth has been installed at the University’s F1 foyer, where it will be open to visitors from 3 to 20 March 2026. Designed to make learning about digital safety more engaging for students, the booth features a range of interactive activities such as AI Avatar, where students can create their own S.A.F.E. Internet AI-generated avatar to represent their digital identity and commitment to cultivating a safer online space. The booth also includes quizzes and game simulations on scam awareness, allowing students to test their knowledge on issues such as phishing, privacy settings, and safe online behaviour.

In addition, the installation provides educational content and practical tips to help students identify scams, protect their accounts, and build safer online habits. These resources feature materials from CelcomDigi’s partner programmes, Creators IRL and Kisah Benar.

Visitors can also participate in the S.A.F.E. Internet Survey, launched in February 2026, which gathers insights from the student community to better understand youth perceptions, awareness levels, and common misconceptions around digital safety and online scams.

The collaboration was initiated by Ahmad Fuad Rahmat, Assistant Professor with the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, who invited CelcomDigi to work with the University to create opportunities for applied learning. As part of the initiative, students from the module formed volunteer teams to staff the booth and explain the activities to fellow students.

By engaging directly with visitors, students are able to turn classroom analysis into real-world communication practice, applying their critical media literacy skills in a public setting.

Apart from merging industry engagement and teaching, this collaboration enables students to test their ideas with live audiences. The installation also proves that academic work can go beyond assessment and contribute to digital awareness in a way that is modern and relevant.
