Biography

Dr Kenny Voon found his interest in virology since his undergraduate studies in Universiti Putra Malaysia. He continued his postgraduate studies in virology in International Medical University. He was given the opportunity to complete part of his Ph.D. work in Australian Animal Health Laboratory, a BSL4 laboratory in Geelong, Australia. He is also a team lead for COVID-19 testing in other teaching institute prior joining University of Nottingham Malaysia. As the team leader for COVID-19 testing, he has organized a dedicated team, plans and setup the testing laboratory. He is a registered Professional Technologist under Malaysian Board of Technologist.

Teaching Summary

Dr Kenny Voon teaches microbiology related subjects in undergraduate and graduate students in pharmacy and biomedical sciences.

Current Research

Dr Kenny Voon research focusing on the discovering novel viruses from bats such as Pteropine Orthoreovirus and establishing this emerging virus as one of the respiratory viruses in Malaysia. His research enables him to publish in several reputable journals such as PLOS, PNAS, JMV and others. He found his interest in virology during his undergraduate study and continue to work on virology discipline related projects as in postgraduate's studies. He is currently investigating the potential of this novel orthoreovirus as oncolytic virus to treat cancer.

He also ventured into environmental viruses and isolating mimivirus-like viruses from soils in Malaysia and different continent, including Antarctica.
