Biography

Dr New Siu Yee received her BSc from University of Technology Malaysia (UTM) and her PhD from National University of Singapore (NUS). During her PhD study, she was involved in multidisciplinary fields of study with three different research groups and spent a year attachment at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). After graduated, Dr New worked as Scientist I in Institute Materials Research and Engineering (IMRE), A*Star, Singapore, before joining the University of Nottingham Malaysia. Her current research interest focuses on nanotechnology based biosensors.

  • Crystallization techniques for both small molecules and proteins.
  • Various characterization techniques: UV-vis, FTIR, 1D and 2D NMR, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), powder X-ray Diffraction (XRD), electrospray ionization-mass spectroscopy (ESI-MS), circular dichroism (CD), spectrofluorometer, surface plasmon resonance (SPR-Biacore), quartz crystal microbalance (QCM), dynamic light scattering (DLS), cyclic voltammetry (CV), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), etc.
  • Experience in polymerase chain reaction (PCR), protein expression and purification (fast protein liquid chromatography-FPLC),

Dr. New teaches across the School of Pharmacy's degree programmes, contributing to the MPharm, BPharm and BSc in Pharmaceutical and Health Sciences. She serves as Programme Director for Pharmaceutical and Health Sciences and as Chemistry Lead for the BPharm programme. Her teaching covers medicinal chemistry and drug discovery, pharmaceutical and biological chemistry, pharmaceutical analysis and spectroscopy, and systems-based pharmaceutical science. Her wider academic responsibilities extend from Foundation to postgraduate level, including moderation at Foundation level and postgraduate research examination.

She adopts a research-led approach to teaching, integrating current developments in nanotechnology, biosensing and pharmaceutical sciences into student research projects, and supervises Final Year Project students and postgraduate researchers in these areas.
