Malaysia Business School reunites generations of alumni

NUBS alumni had a reunion in Kuala Lumpur on 1 March 2014. This informal networking event was held at the home of the CEO and Provost of UNMC, Professor Christine Ennew. Professor Ennew plays an active role in the Business School alumni relations, as she was Director of the Business and Management Division when it was first established in Malaysia in 2000. She still holds the position of Professor of Marketing within the School and is also a Nottingham alumna herself. Commenting on the success of the event, Professor Ennew said, "It was wonderful to see so many familiar faces. I taught quite a few of the people who came to the event when I was first in Malaysia back in 2000 so it was not only a genuine pleasure to see them again but also to hear how they have blossomed in their personal and professional lives."

Dean of the Business School at UNMC, Professor Lee Chew Ging, emphasised the global nature of the alumni community, "As a leading international business school we attract students from all over the world. Naturally, we are able to leverage our presence in Malaysia to provide a unique Asian insight that helps drive business operations and growth in the region. We provide all our graduates with a high quality international learning and research environment that encourages a truly global outlook."

This was clearly reflected in the career paths of the alumni attending the networking event. Many are based in Malaysia but work predominantly for global corporations or businesses with strong international connections. In addition to locally based people, the event also attracted alumni from as far away as Penang, Myanmar and even the UK.

Business Continuity seminar

NUBS Malaysia had the privilege of inviting Ms Ong Ai Lin, a Business Continuity Management (BCM) expert and Senior Executive Director at PwC Malaysia, to speak to our students on 26 March 2014. The seminar was part of a third year module, Risk Management Processes, which introduces students to the corporate risk management process in firms. Ms Ong spoke on the topic of business continuity and reminded students that BCM is a very real concept that helps firms to mitigate the effects of a disaster or crisis. She also emphasised the importance of people and infrastructure when planning for business continuity. The students benefited from many anecdotes and industry examples, which provided useful insight on the niche area of business continuity consulting.

The one hour session ended with a lively question and answer session where students took the opportunity to engage an industry expert in thoughtful discussion and debate on the topic of business continuity.

NUBS Malaysia in Central Asia

NUBS Malaysia participated in the International Education Fair in Kazakhstan from 14 to 16 March 2014. The purpose of the fair was to increase awareness and also promote international institutions to students in Kazakhstan. Various higher education institutions from all over the world participated in this education fair. Ms Wendy Gan, the Director of the NUBS Foundation Programme was the NUBS representative at the fair.

Overall, it was a successful endeavour as many young Kazakhstan students showed an interest in pursuing their education at the University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus. It also initiated discussion for future collaboration between NUBS Malaysia and institutions in Kazakhstan.
