Biography

Dr Tew Peng Kooi is the Head of General Studies Department (formerly known as Compulsory Subjects Unit) in UNMC. He has taken up various responsibilities in planning, coordinating and managing the administrative and teaching affairs of General Studies modules since his appointment with the University from 2002. His academic credentials is extensive as he has completed BA (Hons) (1998), MA (Malaysian History) (2001) and PhD (Malaysian Politics) (2007) in University of Malaya. In year 2012, he successfully completed a MA in Education (2012) at UPM. All these scholastic achievements have intended to enhance his teaching quality and leadership in education. In accordance to the Malaysia government education's policy, this department has grown to become an important entity in supporting the teaching and learning in UNMC.

Current Research

Dr Tew Peng Kooi research strength is in the Malaysian history, mainly the history of the formation, evolution and development of communal and non-communal political parties in Malaysia. This interest is in accordance with his PhD thesis which focuses on the history of one of the non-communal political parties in Malaysia, namely Gerakan Party, between 1968 to 1990. His current analysis focuses on the study of the political situation in this country particularly the impact of the 2013 General Election on Chinese-based parties in Malaysia like MCA, Gerakan and DAP. Ethnic relationships, general elections and the biographies of several political key figures in Malaysia such as Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu, Tun Tan Cheng Lock and Dr Tan Chee Khoon are also part of his exploration theme interest.
