Course overview

Welcome to the School of Environmental and Geographical Sciences (EGS) where we provide a world-class education within a research-intensive environment. Many of our academic staff are leading international researchers in their chosen fields, these include tropical ecology and conservation, various applications in spatial science, agroforestry and atmospheric science. Our research-led teaching style uses innovative techniques to equip students with the specific expertise necessary for a successful environmental career. Along with obtaining the transferable skills needed for independent and lifelong learning students will also gain a truly international university experience. Through research and teaching programmes we engage with a range of environmental organisations and government agencies in Malaysia, south-east Asia, Europe and Australia.  We also have active teaching and research links with our campuses in the UK and China. Fieldwork is central to the degree programme and as such we offer residential field courses to study terrestrial, marine and freshwater ecosystems in some of the most incredible tropical locations and rainforests of the world.

Vision: As part of its strategic plan, the School aims to:

  • “Become a leading centre for the creation and dissemination of environmental knowledge in Southeast Asia.
  • To play a leading role in sustainable natural resource management in South East
  • To maximise opportunities for international exchange for the benefit of both our students and staff.
  • To be inclusive, ensuring equality and diversity across all of our activities “

-Dr Matthew Ashfold, Head of The School of Environmental and Geographical Sciences

Where you will learn

Malaysia Campus

Semenyih Campus is 48km from Kuala Lumpur International Airport and just 45 minutes’ drive from the famous city centre with its iconic Petronas Twin Towers. On arrival, you are immersed in the green jungle backdrop that Malaysia provides with wildlife, sunshine and campus lake.

The campus is home to our business, education, science and engineering schools, which sit alongside a sports centre, library and student accommodation. The University has everything a modern day student could wish for with the added bonus of being located in central Asia allowing you to travel further afield in your free time.

Public transport is plentiful with free shuttle services operating on some routes. Taxi/Grab services in Malaysia are very reasonable and used widely by the student community.

Careers

Graduates will be equipped with both the skills and confidence to find employment across a range of career options: environmental consultancy, conservation and research agencies, local authorities, government agencies, universities and industry. Many graduates go on to undertake postgraduate research degrees in environmentally related areas.

The University has an established Careers Advisory Service (CAS) that provides students with essential resources and guidance for career choices offering many opportunities to develop the skills needed to plan and manage your future. Our Careers Advisory Service will work with you to improve and maximise your employability skills as well as providing essential resources and guidance that will assist you with job/course applications. They will facilitate searches for appropriate work experience placements and connect you to a wide range of prospective employers or training opportunities. ‘Discovering Careers in Environmental Science’ (in collaboration with UNM Careers Advisory Service) is an event which aims to develop a better understanding of the requirements and expectations of employers across relevant industries. In addition, it serves as a platform for students to explore and gather information for internship and future careers and for them to be well prepared for the transition from university to the workplace. Industrial partners and EGS alumni regularly attend the programme to expose students to the career opportunities available in the environmental sciences field.

With a degree from the School of Environmental and Geographical Sciences you will create a wide career path for yourself as a highly sought-after graduate by local and multinational employers. The skills and knowledge gained during your three years at University of Nottingham Malaysia can be applied in job roles such as an Environmental Consultant, Environmental Education Officer, Environmental Engineer, Environmental Manager, Mineral Surveyors, Natural Conservation Officer, Horticulturist, Project Manager or Project Scientist. Fresh graduates can progress from junior executive positions to senior managers in their respective organizations. Having a postgraduate degree increases the salary range.
