Biosciences PhD student wins BESTS award

Pang Ee Leen, a PhD student from the School of Biosciences, has received 2014 BESTS (Building Experience and Skills Travel Scholarships) award from Nottingham UK Graduate School. In fact, Ee Leen is the second UNMC Biosciences recipient of the award. The award recognises researchers in the effort of broadening work experience to promote knowledge transfer and enlist potential network of contacts. 

Under the supervision of Dr Sandy Loh Hwei San, Ee Leen will continue to expand her research works on molecular pharming of dengue viral protein aiming at development of plant-based vaccine candidate against the deadly Dengue disease in the internationally-renowned John Innes Centre (JIC), Norwich, UK. JIC is the second highest ranked UK institution housing cross-disciplinary experts that drives its international role in leading cutting-edge researches. 

During the attachment, Ee Leen plans to undertake focused study on virus-like particles technology to determine the feasibility of the expression platform that has the potential to displace the conventional systems. Besides, her personal qualities including interpersonal skills, professional development, research management and so forth will be greatly enhanced. Upon her return to the Malaysia Campus, she will deliver presentation on knowledge sharing and skills development to promote a wider impact of research.
