NUBS Malaysia Director of Research moderates UNSDG panel at Malaysian Parliament

NUBS Malaysia Director of Research and Associate Professor of Strategic Management Dr Mohan V Avvari moderated a panel discussion on ‘Realising the Value of SDGs – The ROI of Good Business’ at an event organized by the United Nations Global Compact Network Malaysia, held on 11 September 2019 at the Malaysian Parliament. The panel was part of an event entitled ‘Financing the SDGs: Malaysian Private Sector Roles in Bridging the Gap from Goals to Actions’. The panel consisted of speakers from various backgrounds and industries, each of whom presented insights on how the private sector could contribute to sustainable development goals (SDGs) beyond financial means.

Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Youth and Sports YB Steven Sim recommended investing in sports science initiatives which application has potentials beyond the sports arena, in line with the SDGs. CEO of the Malaysian Global Innovation and Creativity Centre (MAGIC) Ms Dzuleira Abu Bakar advocated for the support of the entrepreneurship ecosystem, and Founder of the Climate Governance Initiative Malaysia Datin Seri Sunita Rajakumar reminded company directors of their responsibility, as long-term stewards of their organisations, for changes in the business landscape as a result of climate change. Finally, Director of RRJ Capital Mr Rizal Ishak spoke on how the banking industry could develop products and integrate their operations in a way that supports the SDGs.

The event had earlier kicked off with speeches by Executive Director of Global Compact Network Malaysia Mr Faroze Nadar, Deputy Speaker of Parliament YB Datuk Mohd Rashid Hasnon, and the UN Resident Coordinator for Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei Mr Stefan Priesner.
