Advanced Management Programme: Accelerated Development for Senior Managers,
30 November - 6 December 2014

During 30 November–6 December 2014 NUBS Malaysia ran the Accelerated Development for Senior
Managers Advanced Management Programme in the beautiful surroundings of the Sheraton Langkawi
Beach Resort. The programme was facilitated by our faculty and designed to give participants a real world,
real learning experience. Topics covered included accounting and finance, strategy and competition, leadership
and change management, management of innovation and entrepreneurship, and marketing and branding. 

Attended by senior executives from government and private sectors, the programme also provided the
opportunity for participants to share their theoretical and practical experiences. 

ISI Regional Statistics Conference  

ISI  

A team of four academics represented NUBS Malaysia at the International Statistical Institute (ISI)
Regional Statistics Conference in Kuala Lumpur during 16-19 November 2014 at Sasana Kijang, Bank
Negara Malaysia. The conference was organised by the ISI South East Asia Regional Network in
collaboration with Bank Negara Malaysia (Malaysian central bank), Department of Statistics, Malaysia,
and the Malaysian Institute of Statistics.  

The NUBS Malaysia team, comprising Dr Michael Yap, Dr Hsin-Vonn Seow, Dr Moe Chit Myint and
Dr Chuen-Khee Pek, presented three papers during the Econometric and Statistical Methods for
Economic and Business Decision-Making session. This session was organised and chaired by
Dr Michael Yap who was also a member of the Scientific Programme Committee of the conference. 

BD'One Challenge  

BDOne  

Four undergraduate students from NUBS Malaysia emerged as champions at BDO Malaysia’s inaugural
BD’One Challenge on 12 December 2014. William Buck, Lee Xiang Tan, Fabiolla Netto Martin and
May Yie Chen entered the challenge with Team ProSper, whose name stands for (Pro)fessionalism,
(S)ustainability and (Per)sonalisation. Team ProSper won the challenge, beating five other teams from
University Malaya, Monash University Malaysia, International Islamic University Malaysia and Tunku
Abdul Rahman University College. They received a cash prize of RM3,000 and full-time job offers with
BDO Malaysia upon graduation. Team leader, William Buck, also won Best Presenter at the competition. 

The BD’One Challenge required student teams to present strategies and recommendations to assist
BDO Malaysia in enhancing their brand recognition in the region. The team was mentored by
Dr Chuen-Khee Pek, Assistant Professor of Green Economics and Principal Mentor of NUBS
Malaysia’s Student Competition Mentoring Group. 

CIMB ASEAN Stock Challenge 

CIMB  

Four undergraduates from NUBS Malaysia were the National Champions of the CIMB ASEAN Stock
Challenge 2014. Jerry Ming Zheng Ng, Qing Ern Siew, Qiao Ru Tan and Carshawn Siaw received a cash
prize of USD800 and gained the opportunity to pursue internships with the CIMB Group. The award was
presented by the Malaysian Minister of Youth and Sports at an awards ceremony on 2 December 2014.
The team was mentored by Dr Roy Khong, Assistant Professor of Financial Economics, together with
Dr Chuen-Khee Pek, Assistant Professor of Green Economics.

The CIMB ASEAN Stock Challenge is an annual cross-border simulated stock trading competition. Each
team received US$80,000 in virtual start-up capital to invest real-time in securities listed on major
ASEAN stock exchanges – Bursa Malaysia, the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX), Singapore Exchange (SGX)
and the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET). Participants were required to develop a sound trading strategy
to achieve as much profit as they can during the trading period. 

Celcom ESCAPE Shots Merdeka Video Inter-University Challenge

Undergraduate student, Luqman Hakim Mohd Isa, was the second runner-up in an inter-university
video challenge organised by Celcom Axiata Berhad, a major Malaysian telecommunications provider.
Luqman received a cash prize of RM2,000 from the Chief Executive Officer of Celcom Axiata Berhad
and ESCAPE Axiata Berhad at an awards ceremony on 7 October 2014. 

The challenge aimed to encourage young Malaysian talent from institutions of higher education to
create engaging digital video content in conjunction with Malaysia’s 57th Independence Day (Merdeka)
celebrations. The contest was centred around the theme of heritage, inspired by a song of Malaysian
singer-songwriter Dato’ Sudirman Hj. Arshad.
