The Malaysian Experience 

The Malaysian Experience Summer School is designed to provide you with an exciting insight into key elements of the Malaysian culture within a community-based entrepreneurship setting. This immersion programme in a Malaysian Homestay community will enable you to gain a rich cultural experience through hands-on activities and interaction with the local community which will provide you with the opportunity to study and analyse diverse expressions of culture in the form of art, games, food, dance, crafts, festivals, and micro-industries, anchored on the concept of community-based tourism. Additionally, you will have the chance to explore a popular tourist destination near the Homestay, enjoy the excellent hospitality of Malaysians and appreciate the unique multi-cultural heritage of the Malaysia.

Who is this programme for? 

The Malaysian Experience is primarily aimed at individuals who are interested in summer schools that are based on immersion activities that will provide experiential learning experiences in natural settings.  

The programme also caters for those who prefer to experience the culture of Malaysia by staying with local host-families where you learn by doing, observing, interacting and exchanging knowledge with members of the families and the local community.

All participants who successfully complete the summer school will receive a certificate from the University of Nottingham.

Arrival: 7 August 2017, Monday
Departure: 12 August 2017, Saturday

Alternative dates can be arranged for groups of 20 students.

Programme cost

Fee per applicant: 

  • Malaysians: RM2,300.00
  • Non-Malaysians: USD550.00  


Cost includes

  • all classroom and support costs.
  • accommodation on campus premises and at field work location during the programme.  
  • all meals, workshops and activities at the fieldwork location, and all tea breaks,
    2 lunches and 1 dinner on campus.
  • all transportation during the programme, including excursion.  


Cost does not include

  • air-tickets
  • visas
  • travel insurance
