Assistant Professor in English Language and Literature (February 2014)
The School of English
English was established in September 2013 and its programmes are based on those of the School of English in the UK. Though new to UNMC, the School of English at the University of Nottingham is one of the oldest and most prestigious in the world. Further, there is a vibrant School of English in operation at our other international campus in Ningbo, China, and there are a number of teaching and research links between all three institutions. The Schools have a combined staff-level of roughly seventy-five scholars, who teach, research and publish in nearly every conceivable aspect of the field.
English is uniquely well placed to develop teaching and research programmes in language and literary study, including that of creative writing and drama. It is a crucial element in the recent expansion of social sciences and arts subjects on Campus. The School is based in the Social Sciences Building, conveniently located for access to the library, teaching facilities, information services, central administration and student association buildings.
It currently comprises three full time members of staff (Irwin, Harris, and Sivagurunathan), one adjunct professor (Paramasivam) and two Teaching Associates (Liu and Zhang). In addition, it benefits from the input of a number of associated staff – colleagues on campus with teaching interests in language and literature, global culture, and comparative politics etc - and staff from the UK and China campuses who make regular visits to offer ad hoc classes, lectures or seminars. The school received its first intake of under-graduate students in September 2013 and runs a curriculum based on honours BAs in English Language and Literature and English with Creative Writing. An MA in English Language and Literature will be launched in September 2015, along with an MA in Creative Writing. The school intends to develop its UG intake to about 30-35 students a year, and position itself as a centre for post-graduate and research activities, with a steady-state faculty level of between 6-8 full-time staff.
The School provides the University with a centre of teaching and research excellence in the fields of English Applied Linguistics, Literature, and Creative Writing. It is integrated into the work of its sister schools in the UK and China through the prestigious Centre for Research in Applied Linguistics (CRAL), and has a local Centre for Southeast Asian Writing (CSAW). We are also home to the Book Club, Creative Writing Club and Drama Club.
