Professor Ir Dr Dominic Foo, Professor of Process Design and Integration at the University of Nottingham Malaysia (UNM) and founding director of its Centre for Green Technologies, has launched two books on industrial sustainability issues within the environmental, social and governance (ESG) agenda.
His first book entitled Process Systems Engineering Tools for Industrial Decarbonization, was launched on 5 August 2026 at De La Salle University (DLSU), Manila, Philippines. The book was edited by Professor Ir Dr Foo together with Professor Raymond Tan and Professor John Frederick Tapia of DLSU, with contributions from experts from several countries, including the United Kingdom, China, the Philippines and Malaysia.
It looks at how process systems engineering tools, a specialised area of chemical engineering, can support decarbonisation in the energy and process industries. Additionally, it explores approaches for planning, designing and optimising low-carbon industrial systems, with particular attention to emerging technologies such as Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) and Negative Emission Technologies (NETs).
Systematic Tools for Industrial Water Conservation
The second book, Industrial Water Conservation: Systematic Design Tools and Case Studies, was launched on 9 September 2026 during the 35th Symposium of Malaysian Chemical Engineers (SOMChE). Professor Foo co-authored it with Professor Thokozani Majozi of South Africa, Professor Xiao Feng, and Professor Chun Deng of China. The book addresses the challenges of industrial water use.
It introduces various process integration approaches for water conservation, including water pinch analysis and mathematical programming techniques. Apart from basic techniques on water minimisation, the book consists of various industrial case studies covering the success stories of the various industrial sectors such as chemicals production, food and beverage, textiles, and semiconductors.

Professor Foo is internationally recognised for his work in process design and integration, resource conservation and CO₂ reduction. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia, the Institution of Chemical Engineers, and the Institution of Engineers Malaysia. He has been named among the world's top 2% of scientists in the Stanford University list and has received the Top Research Scientists Malaysia (TRSM) recognition.
The two books build on UNM's work in green technologies, giving industry practical methods for decarbonisation and water conservation.
